This study analizes the determinants of intra-firm trade by multinational companies. Intra-firm trade is accomplished by firms` vertical/horizontal integtation activities in foreign countries. Consequently, it requires the underatanding of the raltionales of vertical/horizontal integration and foreign production to analyze the intra-firm trade. In this study, Internalization theory is adopted as the rationale of vertical/horizontal integration while Location Advantage theory is utilized as the rationale of foreign production. In addition, types of foreign investment, foreign ownership and export requirement by host country are used as control variables. Empirical tests over Korean foreign direct investments show that both technology intensity as a proxy of internalization and low labor cost reflected by productivity as a proxy of host country`s location advantage have positive relationships with the intra-firm trade. The degree of foreign ownership and export requirement by host countries are also shown to have positive relationships with the intra-firm trade.
