First, “1. Introduction” covers the research's thesis and significance, scope and methodology, prior research and issues raised, and the structure of the paper. This paper began with the goal of critiquing Karl Barth's theology from the perspective of the principles of orthodox Reformed theology. The purpose of this critique was to demonstrate that Karl Barth's theology exhibits clear differences from orthodox Reformed theology. To highlight this difference, I contrasted the concepts of "event (Ereignis)" in Barth's theology with the "principle of theology (Principia Theologiae)" in Reformed theology.
“2. Principles of theology (Principia Theologiae): Reformed Theology and Barth's Theology” defines theology from a Reformed theological perspective. The "principles of theology," which constitutes the essence of Reformed theology as Reformed theology, is briefly summarized as the principle of Being (principium essendi), the principle of external Cognition (principium cognoscendi externum), and the principle of internal Cognition (principium cognoscendi internum). He then defined the importance of the concept of event in Barth's theology and defined "theology" in terms of human speech, Jesus Christ, theology, and the Word of God. The concept of event is central to how human speech becomes the Word of God, and the characteristics of the Word of God that emerge as a result of this event constitute the core characteristic of Barth's theology. Barth systematically organized the Word of God, which occupies a central position in his theology, into nine concepts.
"3. The Principle of Being (Principium Essendi): Barth's Trinity and Reformed Trinity" examines three concepts related to the Trinity in Barth's doctrine of the Word of God and its background, Barth's Trinity. It contrasts the "principle of being," a principle of Reformed theology, with the Reformed Trinity that serves as its background. The characteristics of Barth's Trinity are as follows: First, Trinity is the product of the church's interpretation of revelation. Second, the essence of Barth's Trinity is the three repetitions of the one essence centered on hiddenness, unveiling, impartation. Third, in Barth's Trinity, the three modes of being are hiddenness(Father), unveiling/revealing(Son), and the communicated imparted revelation to humanity(Holy Spirit). In contrast, in Reformed theology, the Trinity is one in essence (essentia) and substance (substantia), but three in person (persona) or hypostasis. Each of the three persons is an independent person, and each of the three persons is the same divinity according to essence, but each possesses its own characteristics and personal mode of existence (begotten, procession, and neither begotten nor procession) according to person. Due to these differences in the content of the doctrine of the Trinity, Barth's theology embraces the concepts of the oneness (Einseitigkeit), personality (Persönlichkeit), and determination (Entscheidung) of the Word of God, while Reformed theology establishes the principle of being (principium essendi).
"4. The Principle of External Cognition (Principium Cognoscendi Externum): Barth's Christology and Reformed Theology" examines four concepts related to Christology within Barth's theology of the Word of God and the underlying Barthian Christology. It contrasts this with the "principle of external cognition," one of the principles of Reformed theology, and the underlying Reformed Christology. First, Barth's Christology can be summarized as follows. First, Barth adopts a sacramental approach that pursues the sacramental meaning of Christ. Second, Barth employs a unique concept of time based on soteriological and dialectical logic. Third, Barth explains the covenant centered on Christ, remembering the Old and New Testaments. Furthermore, he explains God as a free God within the covenant, a God who comes in the hiddenness of suffering and disaster, yet who is revealed through the approach of God, whose hiddenness is revealed in the resurrection. Fourth, Barth presents Jesus as the one who realistically demonstrates that revelation can be experienced objectively. Therefore, through his experience of encountering God, Jesus is presented as the one who objectively demonstrates the possibility of revelation for us as well. In contrast, Reformed theological Christology can be summarized as follows. First, Jesus Christ was inaugurated as the mediator of the new covenant and the covenant. Second, Jesus Christ represents Christ, who was incarnated on earth as God the Son, assuming human nature (Assumptio), and who attributes both divine and human attributes to one person. Third, Christ, as the divine and human duality within a single person, is the sole mediator between humanity and God, and is the true prophet who imparts knowledge to us. Fourth, the Bible is the revelation recorded through the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, through the mediation of Christ the Mediator. Therefore, the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God. Due to these differences in Christological content, Barthian theology embraces the concepts of the arbitrary simultaneity (kontingente Gleichzeitigkeit) of God's Word, its worldliness (Welthaftigkeit) and spirituality (Geistigkeit), and its sovereignty (Regierungsgewalt), while Reformed theology establishes the principle of external Cognition (principium cognoscendi externum).
"5. The Principle of Internal Cognition (Principium Cognoscendi Internum): Barth's Pneumatology and Reformed Pneumatology," we examine two concepts related to pneumatology within Barth's doctrine of the Word of God and the underlying Barthian pneumatology. In contrast, we contrast the "principle of internal Cognition" among the principles of Reformed theology with the underlying Reformed pneumatology. First, let's summarize Barth's pneumatology. First, for Barth, the Holy Spirit is a non-personal mode of being, merely a "mutual togetherness (Miteinander)" or "commonness (Gemeinsame)" between the Father and the Holy Spirit, closer to God's act (Akt). Second, the Holy Spirit is God's mode of being that subjectively makes revelatory events possible within humans. Third, the Holy Spirit signifies that the revelatory events that occurred in Jesus are recurring within us as well. This is a kind of possibility, and the possibility that God's third mode of being can occur in us is "faith." Due to these differences in the content of his pneumatology, Barth's theology embraces the concepts of spirituality (Geistlichkeit) and purposefulness (Absichtlichkeit) of God's Word, while Reformed theology establishes the Principle of Internal Cognition (principium cognoscendi internum).
"6. Conclusion: Barth's Dialectical Theology Contradicts the Principles of Reformed Theology" summarizes the discussion so far and critiques four aspects of Karl Barth's theology from an orthodox Reformed theological perspective. First, there is the existentialist interpretation. Second, there is the dialectical use of the analogy of being. Third, there is a sacramental understanding of all doctrines, especially in the Bible. Fourth, the modalistic understanding of the mode of existence obscures the distinction between persons. This study concludes by discussing the significance of this study and suggesting future directions.
