군사정권기 한국교회와 국가권력 = 정교유착과 과거사 청산 의제를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 군사정권기 한국교회의 과거사 청산 의제로 탈선한 기독교 반공주의와 왜곡된 정교유착, 그리고 개발독재와 맞물린 물량주의적 교회성장 지상주의에 대해 살펴보았다.
한국교회의 호교=반공주의는 분단과 전쟁이 빚어낸 한국현대사의 굴곡진 단면을 반영한다는 점에서 이해할 만한 대목이 없지 않다. 그러나 교계 일부 보수 세력이 자신과 신학 노선이 다르다고 해서 에큐메니칼운동을 용공으로 몰고, 반공을 교권다툼의 도구로 이용하는 것도 모자라 국가 공권력의 개입까지 요청한 행위는 비판받아 마땅하다 할 수 있다.
군사정권하 한국의 기독교는 한일협정 비준 반대운동 이래 3선 개헌 반대투쟁과 유신독재에 맞선 민주화 인권운동을 주도하며 세상의 빛 소금으로서 예언자적인 소임을 감당하였다. 그러나 그것은 교계 일부에 불과했고, 다수는 여전히 정교분리에 안주해 사회의 어두운 현실을 외면하고 군사독재에 암묵적인 협조를 하였다. 특히 일부 보수세력은 세상 권세에의 복종, 민족복음화와 심령구원을 앞세워 기독교 민주화운동에 날을 세우고, 국가조찬기도회 등을 통해 독재자의 앞길을 하나님의 이름으로 축복하며 불의한 권력과 유착을 서슴지 않았다.
군사정권의 개발독재와 짝을 이루며 교회 내부에 침투한 물신숭배적 성장지상주의 또한 한국교회가 청산해야 할 과거의 하나였다. 유신체제하 한국교회는 일련의 대형 전도집회를 성황리에 이끌며 비약적인 고도 경제성장만큼이나 급속한 교세의 성장을 이룩하였다. 그러나 교회의 급속한 성장과 대형화는 정치권력뿐만 아니라 재계와의 유칙을 가져와 사회적 약자와의 거리를 더욱 멀게 했고, 청교도적인 신앙의 순수성을 크게 훼손시켰다.
군사정권기 한국교회는 교회성장과 사회참여 양면에서 그 외연을 넓히는데 적지 않은 성과를 거두었다. 그러나 중심을 놓친 외연의 확장은 정체성의 위기와 연결되었고, 그것은 변화하는 시대의 길목에서 깊은 자기성찰을 통한 새로운 정체성의 확립이라는 과제를 이후 한국교회에 던져 주었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis explores the agenda of clearing up Korea’s church history under the military dictatorship such as derailed hard-line anti-Communism, the unprincipled coalition between church and government, and the mammonistic growth-centrism in church.
The anti-Communism of Korean church resulted from the tragic national division and the Korean War. Then some of conservative church leaders committed considerable faults by taking advantage of anti-Communism campaign as an instrument of holding ecclesiastical power. What was worse, they accused the Ecumenical movement for democracy and human rights of a pro-Communist behavior.
In the 1970s some of Christian leaders played the leading role in struggling against the military dictatorship. But they were small part of the Korean church. Most of them settled for the principle of the separation of religion from politics, and were indifferent to the poor and distressed under the military dictatorship. Especially some of them kept a close relationship with the dictatorial government, and blessed military dictators through the National Prayer Breakfast, etc.
With the high growth of economy under the military regime, Korean church were getting larger and larger in scale. And mammonistic growth-centrism spread into church widely. As a consequence Korean church tumed their face away the social security for the minority, and lost simple and honest faith of the Puritan.
During the military regime, Korean church developed highly both the participation for social justice and church growth. But they also experienced the crisis of pure Christian identity. So they have to solve this problem through deep self-reflection on the threshold of a new era.
