This study is an attempt to bring light on the nature of "Hallim pyolgok" which disciples of Kum I 琴儀, a hallim haksa 翰林學士, composed around the year 1216 A.D. which is identified with the third year of the reign of King Kojong 高宗 of th...
This study is an attempt to bring light on the nature of "Hallim pyolgok" which disciples of Kum I 琴儀, a hallim haksa 翰林學士, composed around the year 1216 A.D. which is identified with the third year of the reign of King Kojong 高宗 of the Koryo 高麗 Dynasty(918~1392).
Most scholars of Korean literature in the nation have regarded "Ha-llim pyolgok" as a work in which Kum I's pupils eulogized the magnificent and complacent realites of their life which they were experiencing as incumbent government officials. In addition, they argue that, while singing the praises of the aforementioned realities, Kum's students also strove in the work for harmony between the realities of life and idealism.
The present author, however, has analyzed this work from a view point quite different from that of the majority of present day scholars. The present writer has no objection to the point that Kum I's disciples were coauthers of "Hallim pyolgok". But, it is the author's contention that, by the time they composed the song of the work, they had not yet been appointed to any important official post although they had passed the kwago 科學 or examinations through which students generally entered government service. The present author argues that, while looking forward to their own appointment to official positions, Kum I's students depicted the prospective magnificent life which they were about to lead.
It is the author's assertion that various matters and their indulgence in the extravagant life portrayed in this poem have nothing to do with the realities of their life because "Hallim pyolgok" is a work which delineated a transcendental or prospective world which the composers were to enjoy with their official appointment in the days to come. As a matter of fact, "Hallim pyolgok" was related to the ideal of the composers. However, their desire and volition did not allow them to live the prospective world which they wanted to have, only to envision it as an ideal. Consequently, they described the foreseen world in the work as if they were experiencing such world in their real life.
With the defining of the nature of "Hallim pyolgok" in this manner, the present author has analyzed every stanza in the work in order to investigate what kind of transcendental world the composers experien-ced.
