The purpose of this thesis is to examine the understanding of preaching as a narrative response to the hearers’ existential questions. Contemporary society fosters alienation and identity confusion, intensifying existential anxiety. Furthermore, in the context of the Korean church where the post-Christian phenomenon is accelerating, preaching that is irrelevant to the hearers’ lived experience is in danger of losing the relevance of the Gospel. Accordingly, this study aims to establish a theological foundation for "existential-narrative preaching," which listens to the existential limit situations faced by the hearers and responds to them in a narrative manner. To this end, the theories of Paul Tillich and Paul Ricoeur are examined in an integrated manner.
First, Tillich’s Method of Correlation asserts that preaching must begin with human existential questions and respond with the Christian message. This provides the justification that preaching must be responsive to the hearers’ concrete situation. While the Method of Correlation corresponds to the content of preaching, Ricoeur’s narrative hermeneutics corresponds to the process of preaching.
Ricoeur’s narrative hermeneutics, particularly the Threefold Mimesis, reveals that human temporal experience and identity are constructed through narrative. This provides a theoretical framework to reconstruct the preaching process into three stages: Mimesis I as attentiveness to the hearers’ lived world, Mimesis II as the configuration of meaning through the plot of the biblical text, and Mimesis III as refiguration and appropriation in the hearers’ lives.
The "existential-narrative preaching" proposed through the integration of these two theories is as follows. In the stage of Mimesis I, the preacher listens to the fragmented existential questions of the hearers; in the stage of Mimesis II, the preacher configures the symbol of the "New Being" through a narrative plot based on the biblical text. Finally, in the stage of Mimesis III, the hearers appropriate this configured world into their own lives, thereby overcoming existential anxiety and establishing a new identity.
Within this understanding of preaching, the preacher is redefined not as a mere deliverer of doctrine but as a "witnessing responder," while the hearers are redefined not as passive beings but as "subjects of appropriation" and active participants in the narrative response. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that when preaching becomes an "event of the Word" where the hearers’ existential questions meet the Gospel's narrative response, it can restore the power of the Gospel even in a post-Christian era and lead the hearers into participation in the New Being.
