      Despite the great number of study immigrants (chogi yuhaksaeng) in English-speaking countries, little attention has been paid to how they participate in learning and using English in the host country, and how their English learning is related to their identity construction process. The purpose of the study is to examine how a study immigrant’s identities are constructed in his experience of studying at American schools by drawing on the concepts of communities of practice, imagined communities, and imagined identities. Data were collected through interviews with Andy, a Korean study immigrant, who was enrolled in an American university at the time of the study. The findings show that Andy’s identity construction process can be described in terms of his pursuit of a prestigious university, a well-rounded life style, and a perfect bilingual speaker. His narratives show the conflicts and negotiation between his past and current identities, academic and social English skills, and imagined and negotiated communities. It was also shown that Andy’s use of English was strongly influenced by his communities of practice in which he was compelled or claimed to be a participant of.
