The Jomunju incident, which happened almost a century ago
inside the Yeongjong-do island of the Incheon area, was an incident
which happened because of the Seogyo/西敎(Christianity) believers
arguing the abolishment of idol worship damaged a Buddhist statue
inside a Buddhist temple which was important to the believers of
Buddhism, a traditional religion of Korea. The fact that should be
noted, is that the public was very much concerned with the question
of what the Buddhist statue's 'wrath' would do, to those Christian
believers. They also issued a Tongmun/通文 communique, circulated
it, and tried to resolve the matter by themselves, instead of
informing the authorities. The authorities urged them to report every
thing that happened and leave the matter to be resolved by the law,
but customs of the island's population would not allow it. Leaders
of the Myeon and Ri villages would have a meeting and discuss the
issues, and then would solve the issues themselves.
In the meantime, at the Incheon area's open ports, the Joseon
people were being treated in Western hospitals founded by
foreigners. The population of the Yeongjong-do island received
traditional treatments such as cautery and acupuncture inside the
island, but they were also in need of Western medicine. In the Yeongjong-do island, over a century ago, where one might assume
that there would not have been any noticeable incidents, the
population was witnessing their share of conflicts, conflicts between
the power of traditions and the urge of new changes.
