This study analyzes the impact of climate change on agriculture and food security in Africa, with a particular focus on Guinea-Bissau. Climate change is not merely an environmental issue but a global challenge that significantly threatens the agricultural economies and social stability of Africa. The continent faces severe droughts, floods, and desertification, which have caused substantial damage to agricultural productivity and food supply chains, thereby weakening livelihoods and food accessibility for local communities.
Guinea-Bissau, a small coastal nation in West Africa, is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels, saline intrusion, and declining rainfall. These changes threaten traditional livelihoods, particularly rice cultivation in mangrove wetlands, which has experienced sharp declines in productivity. This not only undermines food security but also adversely affects the region's economy and social stability. By examining the causes and consequences of these issues, this study highlights the interconnectedness between climate change and food security through the lens of Guinea-Bissau's unique circumstances.
Furthermore, the study underscores the necessity of international collaboration to address the challenges posed by climate change, discussing the potential of initiatives such as South Korea's K-Rice Belt project. This initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity in African countries by providing high-yield rice varieties and modern farming technologies. By focusing on self-sufficiency and sustainability, the K-Rice Belt project seeks to strengthen food security across eight African nations, including Guinea-Bissau.
This research provides strategic insights into resolving climate change and food security issues and lays the foundation for sustainable development policies and academic discourse. Thus, this study aims to establish a policy and academic foundation for sustainable development, while proposing strategic international cooperation frameworks to address the challenges of climate change and food security.
