The study is motivated by author's hypothesis derived from teaching vocabulary at college level. The hypothesis is that there seems to be a considerable difference between the vocabulary students were taught in high school and what they encounter at college or in the real field of English. The hypothesis will be tested on the basis of three sets of data, which are a corpus of American educational vocabulary, a corpus of Korean high school English textbooks of the 7th National Curriculum and Cobuild English Dictionary, which is a corpus-based English dictionary. The purpose of the study is two-fold: (a) to investigate the discrepancies between the vocabulary of high school textbooks and Cobuild English Dictionary for Advanced Learners(2001); (b) to consider pedagogical implications from the findings. The comparison of approximately 3,000 lexical items from these data shows the following results and suggestions: first, there is a significant discrepancy in terms of distributions and semantic categories; secondly, EFL learners in high school are less exposed to vocabulary related to current affairs including economy, society, and politics; thirdly, in order to compensate the shortage of the vocabulary it may be necessary to offer ESP courses in the early years of college.
