영국 소재 박물관의 한국실 현황으로 본 과제에 대한 연구 - 대영박물관과 빅토리아알버트박물관의 사례 - = Research on the Korean Galleries in Museums in the United Kingdom - Focusing on the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 영국 런던에 위치한 대영박물관(British Museum)과 빅토리아알버트박물관(Victoria and Albert Museum)을 중심으로 영국 소재 박물관에 설치된 한국실과 한국 전시의 현황에 관해 알아보고 그에 따른 과제에 대해 연구하고자 한다. 대영박물관 한국실은 2000년에 개관하였으며 도자기, 금속공예품, 조각상, 회화 등 삼국시대부터 현대에 이르는 다양한 장르의 전시품을 통해
한국의 유구한 역사와 풍부한 물질적, 시각적 문화를 소개하고 있다. 또한 갤러리 토크와 전시 투어 및 다양한 문화행사를 통해 관람객들의 이해를 돕고 있다. 빅토리아알버트박물관에서는 1992년에 런던 최초로 독립된 한국실을 설치하여 4세기에서 오늘날에 이르는 도자기, 복식, 산업 디자인, 디지털 아트 등 다양한 예술작품을 전시하고 있다. 이와 더불어 전시 연계 교육 프로그램과 디자이너 지원 프로그램을 통해 다양한 방식으로 한국 문화예술을 소개하고 있다. 그러나 두 박물관 한국실에는 빈약한 컬렉션과 전시, 풍부한 박물관 경험을 위한 전시 및 프로그램의 미비함, 그리고 잘못된 정보 제공 등과 같이 보완해야 할 점도 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 점을 개선하기 위해 한국정부와 관련 단체에 해외 박물관과 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 협력할 것과 해외 박물관의 전문 인력 확충에 노력할 것을 제안하고, 우리 국민들에게 한국 전시에 더욱 관심을 갖고 이를 개선하기 위해 적극적으로 참여하는 자세를 요구함으로써 해외 박물관 한국실과 한국 전시의 발전을 모색하고자한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to study into the present condition of Korean galleries and exhibitions in foreign museums, especially those in the United Kingdom, focusing on the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Korea Foundation Gallery in the British Museum, which is the independent gallery for Korean art and history, opened in the year of 2000. It introduces Korea’s long history and abundant material and visual culture through artefacts of various genres such as ceramics, metal crafts, sculptures, and paintings. Also, it has gallery talks and tours and various cultural events that promote the visitors’ understanding in Korean culture and history. The Victoria and Albert Museum established the Samsung Gallery, the Korean gallery in the museum, in 1992. Various artworks that range from the fourth century to present day, including ceramics, fashion, product design and digital art, are displayed in the gallery. Along the exhibition, the gallery introduces Korean art and culture through diverse educational and design support programmes. Still, there are rooms for improvements for more comprehensive and educative exhibitions: poor collections and exhibitions in content; lack of museum experience; and provision of wrong and one-sided information. In order to make Korean exhibitions in foreign museums better, this paper suggests that the government and related organisations should closely cooperate with foreign museums to exchange artefacts and human resources, to research into Korean tangible and intangible heritages, and to exchange cultures and arts with each other. Furthermore, it emphasises the necessity of support for Korean studies in universities overseas, and the importance of the employment of experts and the usage of volunteering system for the foreign museums. Lastly, it recommends Korean people to examine the exhibitions carefully so that they can give feedbacks to the museums to correct mistakes and to improve the exhibitions. The final aim of this paper is to find ways to improve Korean galleries and exhibitions in foreign museums so that more people become interested in Korea and visit the country while the national brand power is enhanced in the international arena.
