This paper presents a direct displacement-based design method, which is one of the performance-based seismic design processes, for the design of new buildings equipped with the passive energy dissipation system(EDS). The viscoelastic damper is utilized as an passive EDS device in this paper. The advantage of the direct displacement-based design method is that the structure and damping devices can be designed simultaneously. Non-linear time history analysis has been performed to verify the design results. It is shown that the target performance level can be achieved with little error.
