This paper compares the poetics and artistic characteristics of ancient Korean Hyangga and Japanese Kikigayō, focusing on how the shared Sinographic concept of “moving heaven and earth through poetry” evolved differently in each country. By analyzing selectedworks, this study investigates how theoretical perceptions of song were embodied in poetic “expression”and “function”.
In ancient Korean poetics, Hyangga was recognized for its “public and efficacious power,” performing shamanistic rituals to influencesupernatural beings in order toresolve reality-based crises. Conversely, Japan’s Kakyōhyōshiki emphasized the "emotional function" of song, focusing on consoling the hearts/minds (yūjō/kenshin) of both spirits and humans. These contrasting tendencies are exemplified inthree thematic groups of songs.
First, in songs regarding a ruler’s broken promise, the Korean Wonga employs restrained imagery to manifest a ritualistic force that alters reality. In contrast, the Japanese Song of Akaiiko uses direct, visual metaphors, such as the lotus, to focus on the humanistic expression of grief and emotional exchange.
Second, in elegies for the deceased, the Korean Jemangmaega combines lyrical sublimation with a supernatural event ”the blowing of ritual money”, showcasing the song’s perceived power over natural phenomena. Meanwhile, the Japanese Banka for Miatsukohime functions primarily to empathize withsorrowand to console the bereaved.
Third, in songs directed toward transcendental objects, the Korean Wonwangsaengga functions as a practical medium to achieve “the religious reality of rebirth”in the Pure Land. In contrast, Yamato Takeru’s deathbed songs describethe landscape of the homeland to find internal tranquility and psychological solace in the face of death.
In conclusion, while Korea expected song to be a “public and transformative power” within ritual contexts, Japan developed it into a tool for “empathy and consolation.” These contrasting characteristics demonstrate that despite belonging to the same Sinographic sphere, each culture crystallized its own unique practices and perceptions of song according to its specific social and cultural contexts.
