정체성, 관점, 대화: 목회상담의 방법론적 기초 = Identity, Perspective, Dialogue: Methodological Foundations for Pastoral Counseling

This essay is an attempt to envisage and construct a contour of the methodology of pastoral counseling. To this end, three dimensions related to the methodaology of pastoral counseling have been investigated. First, the identity of pastoral counselors and the field of pastoral counseling is reviewed by inquiring into the history of pastoral counseling movement beginning from the mid 1920s. By exploring its identity, two important characters of the field have been illuminated: first, pastoral counseling is a praxis-oriented field that creates and accumulates practical knowledge through one` s own experience; secondly, it provides better practice and ultimately gives practical knowledge which is inevitable for pastoral counselors to rigorously engage in the interdisciplinary dialogue between the Christian tradition and human science. Second, the process of the widening of the perspectives and themes of pastoral counseling, which can be summarized as from “the living human document” to “the living human web” is examined. Widening themes and perspective also affects the way of doing pastoral counseling, not only working in the counseling center but also actively working and participating in the community and society to change the world. Third, the methods of interdisciplinary dialogue utilized in pastoral counseling movement are reviewed and categorized into four main methods: (1)correlational method, (2)revised correlational method, (3)transformational method, and (4)artistic method. Finally, some implications of the methodology of pastoral counseling that can be applied in the Korean church context will be reviewed in the conclusion.
