중등영어교사 연수의 효과와 TEE 수업에의 적용

본 연구는 국내 교사연수기관에서 진행하는 중등영어교사 연수과정을 조사하여, 연수 목적과 프로그램 운영 면의 특징을 살펴보았다. 특히, 전라남도 교육연수원에서 시행되는 중등영어교사 몰입 연수를 심층 연구하여 조사하였고, 연수에 참여한 34명의 교사들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 연수가 교사의 영어 실력 및 교실 현장에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다.
조사한 결과, 국내 교사연수기관에서 진행하는 대부분의 중등영어교사 연수 과정은 대체로 의사소통중심 영어교육 및 TEE 수업 개선 등에 초점을 두고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 시간 편성 면에서 교사의 영어 실력 향상을 위한 영어회화수업에 많은 비중을 두며, 교실 현장의 의사소통중심 영어 수업 설계 및 교수-학습 기술에 대한 훈련 등을 연수 내용으로 하고 있었다.
전라남도 교육연수원의 몰입연수에 참여한 교사들을 상대로 설문조사를 실시한 결과, 이 연수가 교사 영어 실력 향상에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 의사소통중심 의 영어수업에 필요한 수업 기술에 대한 아이디어를 제공해준 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나 단기간의 프로그램은 심층적 훈련 제공에 한계가 있으며, 연수 내용과 실제 교실 현장간의 연계성, 그리고 교사들의 교실 복귀 후 교실 영어 사용 비율의 증가와 관련해서는 뚜렷한 효과가 나타나지 않았다.
본 연구 결과를 토대로 하여, 좀 더 나은 중등영어교사 연수를 위해 다음과 개선점을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, TEE의 원칙이 중등영어교사 연수 과정에 적용되어야 한다. 둘째, 현 한국적 교실 상황을 토대로 한 실제적인 TEE 모델을 교사들에게 제시해주어야 한다. 셋째, 교사들이 실제 사용하고 있는 학교의 영어 교과서를 토대로 하여 TEE 수업에 대한 연수 교과목이 마련되어야 한다. 넷째, 최소한 석 달 이상의 장기간 연수들이 지속적으로 반복 실시되어야 한다.
본 연구는 양적 연구에만 치우친 점, 설문 대상을 연수의 한 기수에가 제한시킨 점 그리고 연수 관계자와 강사 그리고 학생들의 의견을 수렴하지 못한 점 등의 한계를 지니고 있다. 향후 연구가 연수 과정에 대한 질적 연구와 함께 조사 대상을 확대하고, 다양한 교육 참여자의 의견을 수렴한다면 더욱 발전적인 연구가 이루어질 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

(Abstract)
The purpose of this study is to examine current in-service English teacher training programs in Korea and to do an in-depth study on the immersion training program for secondary school English teachers in Chonnam province. For this research, I surveyed 34 English teachers participating in Chonnam immersion program by questionnaire to examine the effects of the immersion training program on the teachers' English speaking ability and TEE.
The results of this research showed that most of the current in-service English teacher training programs in Korea are focused on communicative English Teaching and TEE. These programs devote a large amount of time in the English conversation classes to improve the teachers' English speaking ability. They are also concerned with equipping the English teachers with communicative English teaching lesson plans and teaching skills.
The analysis of the questionnaires showed that the immersion training program helped English teachers with their English speaking ability and teaching skills for communicative English teaching. However, the program lasting just a month was packed too tightly for effective in-depth training. Also the connection between the training curriculum and the English classes in the schools was not obvious. Finally, the training programs did not produce a noticeable increase in the teachers' English speaking in
their English classes.
In order to improve the English teachers' training programs, this study suggests the following: first, the TEE principle should be applied to English teachers' training programs; secondly, the training programs for the teachers need to be more focused upon the application of TEE principles within current classrooms; thirdly, training programs for TEE should include the actual textbooks currently being used in the school English classes; finally, training programs should be lengthened to more than 3 months and be periodically repeated.
This study has some limitations. It was slanted toward quantitative research and the sample group was comparatively small. In addition, feedback from students and training instructors was not collectable. It would be ideal for the future studies in this area to do qualitative research, to increase the number of the subjects participating in the study and to seek input from others involved in English education.
