서산 지역 내포제 문화의 영역과 역사적 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 서산지역 내포제 문화의 영역과 역사적 의미를 조망한 것이다. 서산지역에서는 민요, 시조, 판소리 등에 관련한 여러 가지 소리의 전통이 뚜렷하게 존재하는 고장임이 확인되었다. 민요는 논농사소리를 중심으로 이루어졌으며, 시조는 내포제라고 하는 특별한 시조의 유파가 있다. 판소리는 중고제라고 하는 특정한 소리가 전승되는 것을 확인할 수가 있었다. 세 가지 소리의 양상이 내포제 문화의 근간이 되는 것임이 확인된다.
세 가지 사실을 통해서 우리는 내포제의 소리문화가 일정한 지역의 권역 내에서 이루어지는 지역유형의 개념을 형성한다는 점을 인정할 수가 있겠다. 지역유형은 민속학갈래 내의 일반적 현상이고 다른 갈래에도 확대ㆍ적용할 수 있는 요긴한 개념이다. 지역유형이라고 하는 개념이 단일하고 균질감이 있는 것은 아니지만, 적어도 위에서 살펴본 지역유형의 대표적 개념 속에서 이루어지는 소중한 것이 아닐 수 없다. 다차원적이고 다면적인 지역유형이 내포제 소리문화에 동질적으로 등장하는 점은 소중한 성과이다.
하층문화인 토박이소리는 지역적 정체성을 중심으로 지역유형의 근간을 뚜렷하게 유지하고 있다. 그에 견주어서 내포제시조는 상층문화여서 전국적으로 획일화될 법도 한데, 실제로 보면 이들 문화의 공질성에 근거한 이질성이 더욱 두드러지는 내포제시조의 전통을 수립했다. 또한 판소리는 상층과 하층의 합작품인데, 독자적인 지역유형의 유파개념을 구성하고 있으면서 악조적인 근간을 수립한 것을 볼 수가 있다.
