서사의 개정과 의식의 변화

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 서사방법론이라는 새로운 질적 연구방법을 통해 서사의 개정과 의식의 변화가 연결되어 있음을 보이는 한편, 서사의 개정이 일어나는 계기와 조건을 탐색한다. 이 연구는 시간의 경과와 함께 서사에 나타나는 변화를 분석하기 위해 핵심사건의 의미 변화를 조명하는데, 이는 핵심사건의 변화가 서사의 개정을 함축하기 때문이다. 서사의 개정(혹은 생애이야기의 재진술)은, 그것이 성공적일 경우, 파편적인 요소들로 구성된 다중적 자아를 보다 통합적인 자아로 재편한다. 그러므로 서사의 개정과 그것의 조건을 탐색한 이 연구는 개인의 다중적 정체성과 그것이 통합되기 위한 심리적, 서사적 조건을 탐색하는 의미를 지닌다.
이 논문의 주인공은 평범한 주부로서 남편에게 순종적인 자세로 살아왔지만, 남편 몰래 춤을 배우러 다닌 것이 들통이 나서 그 후 남편의 가혹한 구타에 시달리다 아내구타 쉼터로 피신한 여성이다. 그녀는 상담 초기까지만 해도 자기가 얼마나 여자답게 살아왔는가를 힘주어 이야기할 뿐, 춤을 배우러 다닌 자신의 행위를 부도덕한 사건, 혹은 뭐라고 명명하지 못하는 사건으로 묘사한다. 그러나 집단상담이 종료될 시점에 이르면, 그녀는 전혀 다른 의미로 그 사건을 묘사한다. 즉 그녀의 생애이야기의 핵심사건의 의미가 전면적으로 교체되고, 생애이야기는 재진술(reclaiming life story)된다. 그리고 이를 계기로 그녀는 관습적 규범에 순종적인 삶의 자세를 벗어나서 보다 당차고 주체적인 여성으로 변모한다. 이러한 서사의 개정과 의식의 변화에는 주인공 여성이 아내구타 쉼터에 있으면서 새롭게 습득한 도덕적 개념이 큰 영향을 미친 것으로 나온다.
이 연구의 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째 서사의 개정이 일어나는데 필요한 조건(즉 서사의 균열 및 비통합적 주체, 심리적 위기 그리고 새로운 담론 자원의 습득)을 보여주었다는 점, 둘째 비판적 서사 연구를 위해 비통합적 주체 개념이 이론적으로 유용한 도구라는 것을 제시한 점, 셋째 서사방법론의 여성주의적 효용을 점검한 점이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study examines a woman's life narrative through a narrative analysis method. It‘s purpose is to reveal the multiple identity of women, as well as to show that it(multiplicity) is related with psychological liberation and social change. Life history reclaiming implies a process in which multiple identities composed of fragmented elements are reconstructed to a more unified one, if it is successful. I explore the life history reclaiming of a woman to designate the change of her self.
The article analyses a subtle but important change within the narrative over the time in the specter of nuclear episode, since the change of nuclear episode assumes a kind of life history reclaiming(or transformation of narrative). The study also probes the relation between the reclaiming and the drastic change of her consciousness, and examines the condition and momentum of life history reclaiming.
The narrator of the study was a victim of wife-battering who had been living as an common and obedient housewife until her husband started to accuse her of an event so called "dance lesson". In the beginning of the interview she depicted the dance lesson as a morally wrong activity. By the middle of time she could not define it specifically. Until that time she used to tell eagerly how she was a feminine person. However she changed the meaning of the event(dance lesson) into another different one. A kind of life narrative transformation occurred, the transformation was accompanied with change of herself. She became a more assertive and confident person. The narrative and consciousness changes like these revealed to be the consequences or effect of new moral discourse that she has achieved at the shelter for wife battering.
The study has significances as follows. First it shows the condition of narrative transforming(splitting of narrative, ununitary subjectivity, psychological crisis, and learning of new moral discourse). Second it suggests that the ununitary subjectivity concept is very useful for the critical narrative study. Lastly it examines the probability of narrative method as a feminist methodology.
