The performance of order picking systems is mainly a function of the picking method, the expected travel time and the picking time. In this paper we have developed a performance evaluation model for a person-to-part(in the aisle picking system) based on the assumption that expected travel time is equivalent to the expected length travel distance of the shortest path through the pick points. Also we have developed computer programs and have shown the sample results. From a conceptual standpoint, considerable insight was gained in throughput related issues such as the expected value of the optimum tour, picking method and pick versus reserve problem. These are future research areas.
