This study seeks to examine some significant, yet neglected issues over the foundation of the Buin-sa temple. With a historic background, Buin-sa is located on the slope of the Palgong-san mountain representing mountains in Daegu. It has existed from the Silla period and, together with the Donghwa-sa temple, stands for Buddhist temples scattered in the Palgong-san area. Because of virtual absence of historical records, details of the establishment of Buin-sa have been unknown. But some historical remains and relics testify that Buin-sa was a large Buddhist temple not only for the Silla and Goryeo eras but for some length of time in the Joseon period. The temple has become the center of public attention, because it stored 6,000-volume wood-blocks for the printed Tripitaka completed in 1087. The study of the temple has thus focused for the most part on the first set of the wood-block print editions of Buddhist scriptures. As a result, its original name and circumstances over its foundation have not become of a matter of primary concern.
The name of Buin-sa has had several different meanings in Chinese characters. But some historical records, epigraphic records, and inscriptions engraved on roof-tile pieces show that its exact meaning was the “lady [buin] temple.” If the name “lady temple” was used in the Silla period, its original name might have been understood as the “temple of lady xx.” This study infers that the temple may have been the Buddhist sanctum for prayer of lady Jiso, the third daughter of King Muyeol as well as the wife of General Kim Yushin. Lady Jiso became a Buddhist nun in her later years and was invested with the title of “lady” by King Seongdeok. This demonstrates that the Buin-sa temple may have been founded in the reign of King Seongdeok. Also the fact that it was established on the slope of Palgong-san means that the mountain area might be one of Kim Yushin's power bases.
