This study estimates the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor at the plant level for the Korean manufacturing sector. It then derives the corresponding elasticities at the industry-level and for the aggregate manufacturing sector using the framework of Oberfield and Raval (2021). This approach avoids imposing assumptions on the bias of technical change and demonstrates how within-plant substitution, dispersion in capital intensity, and reallocation across plants jointly shape the aggregate elasticity. Plant-level elasticities of substitution between capital and labor range from 0.3 to 0.8, while industry-specific elasticities are mostly distributed between 0.2 and 0.9. Aggregating these plant-level elasticities yields an overall elasticity of substitution between capital and labor for Korean manufacturing in the range of 0.6 to 0.9. Using the estimated elasticities, this study quantifies the bias of technical change and examines changes in the labor income share in the Korean manufacturing sector. Overall, this study provides empirical evidence that the capital–labor substitution structure in Korean manufacturing is jointly shaped by technological adjustments within plants and broader structural characteristics at the industry-level, offering insights into how changes in production structure affect factor input adjustment and income distribution.
