This study examines the influence of relative power upon dyadic militarized conflicts resulting in different hostility levels. In the study of relative power, there are two competing theories: balance of power theory argues that power leads to peace; power preponderance theory posits that power parity leads to war. Most previous empirical studies focus only on the onset of major war. This study tries to change the object of study from war to conflicts short of war, and examines the role of power within all militarized international conflicts, including instances that grows to war and instances that end without war that occurred in the Cold War era. This study compares conflicts involving different levels of hostility levels in terms of the apparent influence of relative power. Results of quantitative analysis demonstrate that sub-war conflicts are negatively associated with disproportionate power. At the same time, there is no noticeable relationship between relative power and major war. Results of this study generally consistent with power preponderance theory. Sub-war conflict is closely associated with power parity. Upon the escalatory assumption, this study suggest that power disparity works as a restraining effect on the onset of sub-war conflict prior to war.
