종교현상학의 창조적 다양성과 비판적 변형 -어윈 굿이너프(1893-1965)의 종교학과 신앙의 관계성- = Creative Diversity and Critical Transformation in Phenomenology of Religion －Focusing on Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough`s Faith and Religious Studies－

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 종교현상학의 다양성과 비판적 변형을 조명하기 위하여 `미국종교학의 대부` 어윈 램스델 굿이너프(1893-1965)의 종교연구와 신앙의 관계를 탐구한다. 굿이너프는 집단무의식을 주창한 카를 융의 영향을 받으며 종교학 교수로서 신학부 교수들과 학문적 긴장과 갈등을 겪었다. 굿이너프의 종교연구에서 `차이`를 드러내는 미국 종교현상학의 초기 분위기를 발견한다. 그는 감리교의 신앙적 토양에서 성장했고 영미의 학문적 흐름을 흡수하면서 비판적 변형의 과정을 거쳤다. 고백적이며 규범적인 성격의 `신학연구`와 확연히 구별되는, 객관적이며 과학적인 성격의 `종교학연구`를 `새로운 종교`로 규정하였다. `시카고학파`와 `하버드학파`라는 미국 종교현상학의 양대 산맥 사이에서 굿이너프는 개신교 신학전통과 마주하면서 타협과 거리두기를 통하여 독자적인 종교학자로서의 길을 모색하였다. 그는 신비주의와 심리학의 관점을 통하여 보편적인 인간현상으로서의 종교를 탐색하였고 초기기독교의 역사에서 진행되었던 근동종교들과 헬레니즘 간의 통섭과 조우의 창조적 과정에 주목하고 구체적인 문헌과 고고학의 자료를 토대로 유형론 중심의 종교현상학적 연구를 시도하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article deals with Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough(1893-1965)`s faith and religious studies in order to understand the creative diversity and critical transformation in phenomenology of religion. There are two main schools in the American phenomenologists of religion: `Chicago school` and `Harvard school.` According to the classification of James Cox, Chicago school includes J. Wach, M. Eliade, and J. Z. Smith. W. C. Smith represents Harvard school. But in Yale there were tensions and conflicts between theology and religious studies. Due to the strong Yale school of theology, Goodenough negotiated with theologians and collaborated with other academic disciplines such as history, anthropology, and religious studies. Under the influence of psychologists S. Freud and C. G. Jung, Goodenough paid attention to internal experiences and mysticism. In the history of early Christianity, he examined the complicated fusion of Judaism, Hellenism, and mysticism by applying various typologies of religious traditions to the understanding of homo religiosus.
