The Effects of Post-traumatic Stress of College Students on Suicidal Behavior: The Mediating Effect and Gender Differences of Mental Health

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of post-traumatic stress on suicidal behaviors of college students and to examine the mediating effects of mental health and gender differences. Participants analyzed data of 375 college students in Gyeongsangbuk-do. For the data analysis method, frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS ver.21. The main results of the study are as follows. First, post-traumatic stress showed a significant positive effect on suicidal behavior of college students. Second, post-traumatic stress had a significant negative effect on the mental health of college students. Third, the mediating effects of mental health on the effect of post-traumatic stress on suicidal behavior of college students differed according to gender. In the case of male students, mental health had a partial mediating effect in the course of post-traumatic stress on suicidal behavior. Female students, on the other hand, were found to have a complete mediating effect. Based on these findings, this study aims to provide social welfare implications for improving mental health and preventing suicide of college students.
