바흐친으로 바이런 읽기: <돈 주안>에 나타난 카니발적 언술

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 바이런의 돈 주안에 나타나는 카니발적 해석을 요하는 부분이 많이 노정되어 있음에 주목하고자 하는 것이다. 카니발 이론에서 보면 작품에서 시인이 일관되게 구사하고 있는 진지하고 엄숙한 공식적인 것과 대조되는 희극적, 풍자적, 해학적, 반어적 목소리는 카니발적 전복, 해학, 풍자와 밀접한 관계가 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 동시에 바흐친이 카니발 이론에서 주장하는 육체의 물질성과 양가성, 육체와 세계와의 관계, 몸의 그로테스크 이미지와 깊은 관련이 있다. 따라서 본고가 지향하는 연구 목적은 기존의 바이런에 대한 비평의 한계를 넘어서 돈 주안의 해석에 바흐친의 카니발 이론을 적용해보려는 시도라는 점에서 연구의 의의와 필요성을 찾을 수 있다. 작품에 나타나는 어떠한 요소가 카니발 이론과 조응하는지 고찰함으로써 문학에 나타난 카니발의 실체를 밝혀볼 필요가 있는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to read Byron’s Don Juan with the theory of Bakhtin’s Carnivalesque discourse. The key phrase of the paper refers to various characteristics of the medieval popular carnival such as the carnivalesque ambivalence, the gay relativity, the inversion of the social hierarchy, and the people’s festive laughter demolishing the comic and political fear of death and oppression. In Don Juan, through the character, Byron subverts the image of hero by representing an anti-hero. The motif of the carnivalesque can be found not only in the bedroom farce, but also in the scene of shipwreck. In view of Bahktin’s theory of the carnival, Don Juan ultimately celebrates the ambivalent but creative power of the carnivalesque discourse shared both by humanity and nature.
