It was about 250 years since the flute instruments have taken an important role in orchestra, brass band and chamber music, as in today, and its role has gradually increased in line with the improvement of the instruments and its performance technique.
In the later part of 17th century, Jean Hottererre made a basic improvement on modern flutes. In 1847, Theobald Boehm who manufactured Boehm type flute completed the modernized flute which has been used untill today. Flutes being used in 20th century were only added by the key devices to the instruments used in 19th century without a basic modification, and the current flute manufacturers are concentrating their efforts in study on the tone colour.
In 1967, however, Bruno Bartolozzi through his thesis "New sounds for wood wind" presented a detailed method in creation of several sounds at a same time, and casted a wide range possibilities of the flute instruments to the modern composers. In view points of multi-sound performance method being actually used in the articles, it will be difficult to predict the future development of the flute.
