      조선시대 전라도 사마안 연구(2) - 곡성 사마안 사례 - = A Case Study of Goksung Samaahn in Joseon Period

      Samajae was the school where Saengwon(classics licentiate) and Chinsa(literary licentiate) got together and engaged in studying. Samajae made Samaahn in which the names of Saengwon & Chinsa were listed. By the time of 1537 when several Saengwon & Jinsa passed an examination all together, Samajae was built and Samaahn was written in Goksung county.
      Before Goksung Samajae had been burnt during Japanese invasion, Saengwon & Jinsa whose names were recorded Samaahn were Yangban clans. Saengwon & Chinsa of Goksung county tried to rebuilt Samajae but could not accomplish the goal because of lack of fund. But Samaahn was restored in 1604. In 1755 Samaahn was newly revised, and Samajae was rebuilt in 1777 because several Saengwon & Jinsa successfully passed the examinations.
      In the period of King Kojong the number of Saengwon & Chinsa who passed the exam has increased the total number of 12, but only 3 was enlisted in Samaahn. Hyangri and rich commoners passed the examinations, but their names could not be listed. Up until the end of 19th century stubbornness in regard to social status was still working in Samaahn. Yangban sajok stopped recording Samaahn after listing those who passed Jinsa exam in 1882 to prevent local conflict.
      Those who excluded in Samaahn were listed in 『Goksung Gunji』(1918) which was made by descendents of Hyangri. But Consciousness of distinction between yangban and commoners was still shown in 『 Yokchonsokji』(1923) that was made by the descendents of Yangban sajok.
      Clonicles of Goksung province that were edited after the restoration of independence listed those whose passing of the exam was not clear. This fact reflected the desire of the people who wanted to claim that they were the descendents of Yangban.
