Koryeodogyeong is originally a ‘dogyeong(圖經)’ that had pictures with supplemental texts to help explanation. However, the pictures were lost with only supplemental texts remaining and, therefore, it is sometimes difficult to clearly understand the actual contents.
This paper attempts to make a rational understanding of the observational records about two Chang-langs in Gaegyeong(開京). The records tell us that at least one Chang-lang of the two is Sijeon-Haeng-lang of Dae-si. However, such Chang-lang can be misunderstood as vacant according to a record left by Seogeung(徐兢). There have been various opinions as to how to interpret such record as it can ultimately determine the importance of Gaegyeong in the history. Therefore, this paper attempts to reexamine the records about Chang-lang which has been the subject of controversy and to interpret the related records while keeping in mind the perspective and intention of Seogeung.
As a result, first of all, the location of Bongseon-go(奉先庫) was newly determined and marked on the area layout map of Gaegyeong (as shown in Figure 2). Based on this, I propose the possibility that the second Chang-lang was a separate commercial facility from the first Chang-lang by suggesting a new interpretation of the paragraph ‘至府及館’ which is the subject of controversy in the related documents.
Next, I provide a different perspective by suggesting a new interpretation of the meaning of ‘其中’ in the related documents as “in the left by Seogeung simply describes the surroundings of the hill[岡阜] (refer to Figure 3) and does not indicate Chang-lang is empty.
All things considered, I think Chang-lang as observed by Seogeung was a commercial facility for Ga-si(街市), a market located along the main streets of Gaegyeong, and was in a proper operation during the visit by Seogeung, and as a result, Seogeung probably observed the scene of crowded Ga-si with a lot of people. This kind of Chang-lang built in Koryeo Gaegyeong and the operation of Ga-si became highly regarded by the government of Choseon(朝鮮) and, thereafter, the King Taejong(太宗) of Choseon recognized Haeng-lang(行廊) as ‘京邑之體’ and further expanded and applied it to the new capital, Hanyang(漢陽).
In summary, this paper attempts to reevaluate and make rational sense of the seemingly contradictory statement about Chang-lang in Koryeodogyeong. As a result, I conclude that we can make a rational understanding if we keep in mind that the target readers of Seogeung were ‘宋人’ and, in addition, the overall narrative structure of the related records based on the structure of Koryeodogyeong (as shown in Table 2). Conclusively, it is reconfirmed that it is important to understand the perspective and intention of the author, Seogeung, to correctly interpret the related records of Koryeodogyeong.
