      Through the formation of western rationalism, it was feasible for mankind to perceive themself as individual "self-being". Knowing, or perceiving "self-being" means that the standard of the decision making process based on one's reason. Western rationalism stemmed from the era of Italian Renaissance, which was more embodied with the appearance of Enlightment. It could be characterized by the tendency of explaining things as the relationship of goal-instrument and abstract principal from a standpoint of instrumental reason.
      Yet, rationalists showed a great deal of interests in education, but their vision regarding education mainly focused on realization of intellectual excellence through education. Referring to those rationalists, education has to be organized as a goal-instrument relationship. Hence, every subjects independently serve as instrumental elements to accomplish those fundamental goals of education. Moreover, it underlines the importance of technical knowledge and its process of discipline.
      Since the western rationalism have significant influence on all aspects of education, it is impossible to keep the contemporary physical education from those influences which emphasize "goal-instrument" paradigm or "technical knowledge. Such attitudes toward may produce an extrinsic justification of other potent educational value in physical education. Consequently, problems may exist if the instrumental importance of sport skills are being regarded as the first priority. In addition, although physical education may enrich other educational values, the current trend of intellectual inclination in physical education and its curriculum appear to be distorted by overemphasizing such propositional knowledges and technical knowledges of sport.
