The purpose of the study was to measure the problem solving ability of the students majoring practical arts education in a university of education, and to find the differences in students'problem solving ability by their grades. The target population for the study was the students of the departlnent of practical arts education in a national university of education. To assess the students'problem solving ability, the'Cornell Critical Thinking Test - Level Z'was used. Total of 148 students participated the test and the results for the test from 124 students (83.7%) was used to analyze. The data from the students was analyzed with the statistical program of Sp55 for Windows.
Conclusions was made as followings: 1. Mean score of the subiects'problem solving ability was 15.51, which was higher than the high school sllldents in U.S. but lower than college students in U.S.; 2. There was no difference in subiects'problem solving ability by their grades. That is, students'problem solving ability was not promoted during their college education. To promote students'problem solving ability, several suggestions were discussed including'curriculum in the Taegu National University of Education needs to be revised','teaching methods of professors and insITuctors need to be changed', and 'students should be encouraged to participate their extra-cuHicula activity'.
