ABSTRACT

The Chinese traditional garden as an important part of the Oriental landscape has become the most popular topics of many researchers. So it is very necessary and important for creative landscape design and planning to perform a research about Chinese traditional Garden. The Zhuo Zheng yuan(拙政園) is a representative model of the traditional garden in southern China.
The purpose of this study is to inherit the landscape technique of traditional garden and to identify the principles of modem landscape design.
Therefore, comparisons of Zhuo Zheng yuan in different era and distinctions between them and other traditional gardens was performed. And then the architectural style and characteristics from its architecture style, composition of space, essential factors and skills of landscape architecture was summarized.
The results are as follows.
1. House and garden of Zhuo Zheng Yuan are separated from each other, which makes them both integrated and independent.
2. Zhuo Zheng yuan has a bidirectional layout for the inside and outside.
3. Zhuo Zheng yuan has a natural landscape structure.
4. The whole garden and courtyard are both inter-penetrated in details and displayed a picture of variety in unity.
5. The inner part of the garden uses a combination of static, middle and dynamic landscape effects.
6. Zhuo Zheng yuan flexibly use techniques of various kinds of borrowed scenery.
7. It highlights the water landscape through our seeing, listening, smelling, taste and touch.
8. It shows profound landscape style in intrepidness.
9. It seems to be made by God, but actually it is designed by person.
10. Zhuo Zheng Yuan creates a moving landscape by using outer landscapes.

It is necessary to take actions that suit local circumstances and obtains material from local sources in modern times. Break up the whole into parts and makes unification of the whole and make a distinction between the essential and the lesser one in order to have the big picture by a small view. It considers of all the main parts and stands out its key points. Highlights the theme and creates feature. It rationally regulates the complexity and similarity of the inner parts.
