동아시아 지역주의 = APEC과 미국

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of regionalism in East Asia. For this, APEC is the object of the analysis and the main characteristic of APEC as regional cooperation in East Asia is regarded to be reflected US interest of regionalism strategy. Regional cooperation initiated by Asian countries was tried by ASEAN countries in early stage, but failed owing to non-cooperation of Japan and China and US rejection. US intention toward APEC symbolized by open regionalism and low level of institutionalization is, on the one hand, to connect economic dynamics in East Asia to US economy and, on the other hand, to eliminate the situation of APEC initiated by Japan without US and to respond European regionalism toward Asia. Recently, ASEAN+3 is aiming to East Asian Community and new direction of regionalism in East Asia. However, the passive pattern of Japan and China toward regionalism in East Asia is not likely to change for the near future and is meaningful for Korean strategy on APEC. That is, we'd rather search for the strategy that APEC is to be more comprehensive regional cooperation enlarging to non-economic issue area in North East Asia without multilateral security cooperation.
