This is a thesis written about Seog Ji, Chae Yong Sin who had maintained and developed korean portrait paintings from late Chosun to modern times of Korea.
Chae Yong Sin is a substitute of a korean portrait painter from late Chosun to colonial times. He draw a variety portrait not only king's but also common people's. Especially he painted many patriot's portrait during colonial times. Also he presented his own view of the world and we must focus on his own modern painting world by harmonizing traditional and new.
Seog Ji was born on fourth of February in 1850 at Sam Chong Dong , Seoul. He lived through colonial times to modern times. He graduated for civil office in martial art. And to hold office for about 20 years.
And he also participated in coping & painting of royal portraiture in three times.
In 1905, He met Choi, ik-hyun when he was a mayor of Jungsan, his painting world went through a big change. He drew many patriot's portrait who advocated independence. After 1915, He painted portraits of common people by order.
The times when his paintings were compelted was confused for fighting between Catholic and confucianism, so tragically ended by Treaty of Ulsa & Chosun-Japan annexation
Though in this times, culture from foreign countries was fresh trend, and this trend also influenced fine arts. Transmission of western paintings and modern photo influenced late Chosun paintings which was esteemed a Chinese painting of the Southern school. Chae Yong Sin accepted this new trend and reflected his paintings, so he made his own tendency.
His characteristic of his portraits didn't follow old fashioned ways. He advanced plane paintings and shadowing techniques to cubic measures using by gradation and combined lines, well expressed solid facade.
Also the characteristics of mode, we can see formations of posture, hand actions, belts and ties are unique fashions of his portraits, these characteristics get important position in portrait painting ways as all the bodies.
Chae Yong Sin actively accepted western painting techniques and modern photographs in late Chosun, showed modern korean art mode and its changes precisely. With this point, he has very important position of korean fine art history.
