Focusing on His Epitaph, Message of Condolence, and History of the Deceased Song Si Yeol, who secured the most important position in the 17th century Joseon political philosophy, set the direction of ideology and thought of his time. So, his perception on anything can be considered as an important clue to understand the time. Therefore, through his perception on woman, this paper wants to prepare a clue to understand the time Because of the specific environment of Joseon society, the materials on women are extremely rare. Epitaphs, message of condolence, and histories of the deceased are the only materials. Therefore, through these materials, this study deals with Song`s perception of woman. The Joseon society when Song lived and worked, though it had escaped the crisis of collapse, was still unstable and its state and family ethics were not strong enough. For the man to try to establish a stable society as the main actor of national management, the woman, as his partner, should keep the house as the master of house management. Song`s perception of woman has the focus on the formation of woman who takes care of the family as partner of high government official or high scholar. To Song, woman is not weak or obedient being, but strong and subjective being. Only such a woman can do her best in her domain. If the woman who is both wife and mother neglects performing her duty of educating children and managing family members, the country and the society will be in serious crisis. To perform such roles, the woman, equipped with insight and strong will, should deal with all the situations firmly and wisely. That is, as the virtue of self-discipline and leading others was required to the government official and scholar of his age, a certain virtue was necessary to the woman of such class of the society. It was the mother who devotes herself to teach her children and a wise wife to her husband who serves as a helpful friend. Such was the ideal of Song`s woman who played a major role in family economy which was equivalent to the achievement in public domain of her husband.
