The Study on Korean Adolescent Boys` Hand Development

The aim of this study was to capture the distinctive feature of Korean adolescent boys’ hand size growth. The subjects were Korean adolescent boys (n=352) from 14-19 years of age. The total 19 measurements were measured from the right hand by 3D hand scanner. Three calculated dimensions were added. Subjects were divided by age into early(14-15years), middle(16-17years) and late(18-19years) groups and their hand sizes were compared. They were also grouped by weight and height. As a result, there was significant difference among age groups in hand length and circumference measurements. However, the hand size of middle age adolescent group was bigger than that of early and late age adolescent groups. The more subjects weigh, their fingers were longer and thicker than others. The study also examined the hand size of them who were taller than average height of adult males in the twenties (n=215). There was remarkable difference in hand dimensions between the adolescents and the twenties groups. Fingers of the twenties were longer and thinner than those of the adolescents. Although the adolescents’ height was as tall as adults, their hands were in process of growing. There were significant differences between adult males in the twenties and the middle age adolescent boys in several the hand dimensions though their heights were similar. The hand lengths of twenties were longer than those of the adolescents. The finger circumference and width measurements of adolescents were bigger than the twenties’ measurements. These results intimate that the fingers of adolescents could be longer and thinner than the current twenties men at their adulthood. The finding of this study that the hands of middle age adolescent group were dramatically developed suggests that the hand dimensions of Korean adult males have a chance to become bigger than now when the adolescents become adults.
