This essay is an attempt to understand the cultural politics of Korean heritage language schools(KHLS) in the USA. KHLS seem to be in the crisis due to the lack of fulfillment of its mission, yet they enjoy sound student enrollment. In order to decipher this puzzle, this study employs two theoretical tools; racial monority model suggested by Nazli Kibria and the concept of suture by Stuart Hall. Utilizing these two theoretical tools, this study analyzes the responses of Korean Americans of the Hankook School to the racializing forces of the society: the responses of the first generation and second generation respectively. The analyses firstly reveals that the first generation Korean Americans are forced to have racialized ethnicity as their group identity. The first generation, however, suture themselves into the positive Koreanness to fight back to the racializing forces. The the Hankook School is a medium through which Korean Americans construct cultural competence, though their effort is confined to the Korean American community. Secondly, the analyses shows that the second generation Korean Americans invest themselves into the identity of mainstream though this identity is limited by the racializing forces of the society in their later days. Thridly, based on the cultural politics between different group identities within the Korean American community and their limitations, this study could draw a conclusion that the Hankook School`s unique situation is the product of the interactions and compromises of cultural politics between the two generations. The interviews were conducted to collect data and Hankook school students, parents and teachers, volunteered to be interviewed.
