ABSTRACT
This study examined the relationship between insecure attachment and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among emerging adults and investigated the mediating effects of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and self-care competence, as well as their serial mediating effect. A survey was conducted with 155 emerging adults aged 19 to 24 residing in Korea. The measures included scales of insecure attachment, nonsuicidal self-injury, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and self-care competence. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and Hayes’s PROCESS Macro 4.2. Correlation analysis, simple mediation analysis, and serial mediation analysis were conducted.
The results were as follows. First, insecure attachment showed significant positive correlations with ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and nonsuicidal self-injury, and a significant negative correlation with self-care competence. The same pattern was found for the subdimensions of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. Second, the simple mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness was significant in the overall insecure attachment and attachment avoidance paths, but not in the attachment anxiety path. Third, the simple mediating effect of self-care competence was significant in the overall insecure attachment, attachment anxiety, and attachment avoidance paths. Fourth, the serial mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and self-care competence was significant in the overall insecure attachment and attachment anxiety paths, but not in the attachment avoidance path. However, the serial mediating effect in the attachment anxiety path should be interpreted with caution, as the lower bound of the confidence interval was very close to zero.
These findings suggest that, in understanding nonsuicidal self-injury among emerging adults, it is necessary to consider not only insecure attachment itself but also conflicts surrounding emotional expression and self-care competence. In particular, the pathway through self-care competence was relatively salient for attachment anxiety, whereas the pathway through ambivalence over emotional expressiveness was relatively salient for attachment avoidance. At the overall insecure attachment level, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and self-care competence were sequentially related to nonsuicidal self-injury risk. This study contributes to expanding the understanding of nonsuicidal self-injury in emerging adults and provides foundational data for counseling and preventive interventions.
