러시아의 시리아 내전 정책과 중동 영향력 확대 모색 = Russian Policy on the Syrian Civil War and Expansion of Influence in the Middle East

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Given the foreign policy of Vladimir Putin supporting revival of a strong Russia, this study examines how Russia's intention to expand its influence in the Middle East was reflected in its policy on the Syrian Civil War. Russia’s intervention in the Syrian Civil War went beyond defeating ISIS, and instead was intended to provide a bridgehead for entry into the Middle East by defending the geopolitically important Assad regime. In addition, Russia attempted to secure its political position as a mediator of conflicts by leading various diplomatic initiatives. Above all, Putin sought to establish cooperative relationships with major regional political actors such as Iran and Turkiye, which could contribute to Russia’s expansion of influence in the Middle East.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 강한 러시아를 꿈꾸는 푸틴의 외교정책의 관점에서 러시아가 시리아 내전 기간 중동 영향력 확대를 위해 어떠한 전략을 모색했는지 분석하였다. 우선, 러시아의 시리아 군사 개입은 ISIS 격퇴 차원을 넘어 지정학적 중요성을 지닌 시리아 아사드 정권 수호를 통해 중동 진출의 발판을 마련하려는 정치적 의도를 갖고 추진되었다. 이외에도 러시아는 다양한 외교적 플랫폼을 주도하며 갈등의 중재자로서 정치적 입지를 확보하려 했다. 무엇보다 푸틴은 이란과 튀르키예와 같은 역내 주요 정치행위자들과의 협력관계 구축을 도모했다. 이와 같은 푸틴의 시리아 내전 정책들은 러시아의 중동 영향력 확대에 기여하는 것으로 평가된다.
