탈서구중심주의적 미래의 모색: 교차·횡단·공존의 사상적 모델을 찾아서

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 이후 한국사회는 서구에서 장기간에 걸친 근대화를 압축적으로 수행하면서, 서구주심주의가 우리 깊숙이 자리 잡게 되었다. 이 과정에서 한국사회는 서구적 가치에 입각해 우리 자신의 과거를 부정하고, 서구 근대의 성과를 빠른 시간에 따라잡는 데 열중해왔다. 하지만 우리는 그 과정에서 자신이 직면하고 있는 다양한 문제들을 평가·진단·대응할 수 있도록 자기 현실을 총체적으로 성찰·전망할 수 있게 해주는 독창적인 정치사상을 창출·운영할 수 있는 능력을 제대로 발전시키지 못하게 되었다. 서구 국가들은 자신의 특수한 역사적 경험과 사상을 보편적 잣대로 상정하여 비서구 국가들의 역사적 경험과 사상을 왜곡 또는 일탈로 치부해온 측면이 있다. 우리는 이를 서구중심주의라 부른다.
우리 연구팀은 과거와 현재, 서구와 비서구를 가로지르는 비교 사상 연구를 통해 서구중심주의를 극복하는 방안을 모색했다. 나아가 서구중심주의에서 벗어난 미래를 만들고자, 즉 탈서구중심주의적 미래를 가능케 할 정치사상 모델을 만들기 위해 단지 하나의 정치사상 모델에 머물지 않고 다양한 정치사상 모델을 검토하면서 교차·횡단·공존의 정치사상 모델을 정립하는 데 목적을 두었다. 정치사상은 한 사회의 패러다임이자 운영프로그램이라 할 수 있으며, 그 사회가 직면하고 있는 단기적·정책적·제도적 문제를 어떻게 진단하고 대응할 것인지에 대한 방향타 역할을 한다. 위대한 문명이나 국가의 역사가 입증하듯이, 한 사회가 지속적이고 성숙한 발전을 누리기 위해서는 그 사회가 지닌 사회적·경제적·문화적 역량을 높일 수 있는 정치 발전과 이를 이끌 수 있는 정치사상의 발전이 반드시 필요하다.
본 연구팀은 서구중심주의의 극복방안을 모색하기 위해 횡단적 연계성 개념과 교차문화적 대화라는 방법론, 즉 서구와 비서구의 정치사상을 가로질러 비교하면서 연구를 진행하였다. 소형단계에서 비교연구의 범위가 한국과 서구, 전통과 현대의 비교로 출발했다면, 중형과 대형단계에서 그 범위는 서구와 동아시아, 라틴아메리카, 이슬람권, 인도 및 동남아시아 등 전 세계적 차원으로 확장될 것이다. 이를 통해 궁극적으로 서구중심주의에서 벗어나는, 달리 말하면 탈서구중심주의의 새로운 학문적 방법론을 개발하고 탈서구중심적 정치사상 모델을 수립하는 데 기여하고자 했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since the 20th century, Western-centrism has infiltrated deeply into Korean society through the compressed modernization in a short time that had actually proceeded for a long period in the West. During the catch-up process of modernization, Korean society has denied its past according to western values, and concentrated on following the outcomes of the Western modernization. However, Koreans have been losing the capability to build their own distinctive political thought that could address, examine, and evaluate the various current problems by self-consciousness and critical review of the real world where they are living in. Meanwhile, Western countries regard the historical experience and philosophy of the non-western countries as distortion or deviation on the basis of the standard that has been set by the particular experience and thought in Western history. We call this phenomenon Western-centrism.
This research seeks the strategy to cope with the Western-centrism in comparative political philosophy by theoretical study crossing the past and the present, and the West and the Non-West.
