뉴미디어 시대 사변서사(Speculative Fiction)의 미학적 가능성: 미디어아티스트 김아영의〈다공성 계곡〉시리즈를 중심으로 = The Aesthetic Potential of Speculative Fiction in the New Media Era : Focusing on Media Artist Ayoung Kim’s〈Porosity Valley〉Series

동시대 미디어아트는 미디어 기술의 진화와 함께 스토리텔링의 방식과 구조를 전환시켜 왔다. 이 논문은 미디어아티스트 김아영의 〈다공성 계곡〉 시리즈를 중심으로, 뉴미디어 시대 사변서사(speculative fiction)의 미학적 가능성을 분석 한다. 사변서사는 현실의 역사 및 정치적 조건을 바탕으로 ‘존재하지 않았거나 말해지지 못했던’ 가능성을 서사화하는 전략이다. 이는 도나 해러웨이(Donna Haraway)와 로지 브라이도티(Rosi Braidotti)가 제시한 포스트휴먼의 서사적 실 천 개념과 맞닿아 있으며, 인간 중심의 세계 인식을 넘어 다종적 존재와 감응하 는 세계관을 구축한다.〈다공성 계곡, 이동식 구멍들〉에서 〈다공성 계곡 2: 트 릭스터 플롯〉으로 이어지는 김아영의 연작들은 다공적 서사, 다성적 주체, 다층 적 세계를 주요 특징으로 구축한다. 특히 〈플롯 다이어그램〉, 〈판게아 요소 들〉, 〈판게아 목소리〉, 〈페트로제네시스, 페트라 제네트릭스〉는 비주얼 매 핑, 사운드 아카이빙, 사변적 시뮬레이션을 통해 허구와 현실, 인간과 비인간, 기 억과 오류가 교차하는 복합 서사를 구현한다. 이러한 전략은 기존의 재현 언어로 포착되지 않는 사건과 존재를 드러내며, 세계를 재사유하도록 하는 감각적 실험 으로 기능한다. 궁극적으로 이 연구는 사변서사가 동시대 뉴미디어 기반 세계관 스토리텔링의 전략적 방법으로서 인문콘텐츠 창작과 비평 연구의 지형을 확장할 가능성을 모색한다.

Contemporary media art has fundamentally transformed the modes and structures of storytelling in response to the evolution of media technologies. This paper analyzes the aesthetic potential of speculative fiction in the age of new media, focusing on media artist Ayoung Kim’s〈Porosity Valley〉series. Unlike conventional science fiction, speculative fiction constructs narratives around possibilities that “never existed or were never spoken,” based on historical, political, and geological realities. This narrative strategy resonates with Donna Haraway and Rosi Braidotti’s notion of posthuman narrative practice, advancing a worldview that embraces multispecies existence and plural sensory modalities beyond anthropocentric perception.
Spanning from〈Porosity Valley, Portable Holes〉to〈Porosity Valley 2: Tricksters’ Plot〉, Kim’s series constructs a layered narrative structure characterized by porous storytelling, polyphonic subjectivity, and stratified worlds. In particular, works such as 〈Plot Diagram〉,〈Pangaea Elements〉,〈Pangaea Voices〉, and〈Petrogenesis, Petra Genetrix〉 employ visual mapping, sound archiving, and speculative simulation to create a complex narrative where fiction and reality, human and nonhuman, memory and error intersect. These strategies make visible the affective residue and untranslatable presence that escape conventional representational languages, functioning as sensorial experiments that reconfigure our understanding of the world.
Through this, the study demonstrates how speculative fiction serves as a foundational strategy for world-building storytelling in contemporary new media and transmedia narratives, offering new directions for the creation and critique of humanistic media content amid the co-evolution of media and narrative.
