The purpose of this thesis is to study on his understanding the realities of that time through the analysis of the meaning of "hometown" written as motive in his early poe Ji Yong's position and weight among poets in the history of contemporary Korean poetry has been steadily discussed since 1930. The common point of discussion is that his poems show significant different features against 1920 poems in the view of sharply perceptive words and presentation of image.
In 『Chung Ji Yong's Poetical Works』, collected from his early poems, "hometown" archetypal image is an essential element as motive.
The meaning of "hometown" in his early poems can be classified into three types as follows :
First, the world of understanding on "hometown" in his works is the place where there is sorrow of seperation and a eagerly wish to come back. His poems are represented as the children's verse with child's mind. A character in his works is kinship such as elder brother and elder sister, and they all are represented with the structure of their seperation in his poems. His poems show the common features which personae melted into absolute loneliness.
Second, he felt inconsistency in reality because of living in dark age under the control of Japanese Imperialism. So, in the world of understanding on "hometown", we can find a loss and frustration of the self owing to the disparate between the idea, which "home town" demended to poet and the reality at that time.
Third, the world of understanding on "hometown" is the place where there is Utopia with adream and a wish. In a dark colony age he disavows "hometown" owing to the loss of his selfness and the self-scorn. However the "hometown" in his poem, becomes the subject with a wish a never-to-be-forgotten in dream.
