      Physiological effects of sports climbing, especially sports climbing club activity, have not been fully understood. The purpose of the study was to elucidate the effects of sports climbing club activity for health promotion by comparing insulin resistance, blood lipid profiles, and health fitness age between sports climbing club participants and general individuals in middle-aged, 33-50 yrs, women. Fourteen sports climbing club participants (SC) and 13 general individuals (GEN) volunteered to participate in the study as subjects. Variables related to insulin resistance, blood lipid profiles, and health fitness age were measured and compared between SC and GEN utilizing independent t-test. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Fasting plasma insulin and HOMA-IR were significantly (P<.01) lower in SC than GEN. 2) HDL-Cin SC tended to be higher (P=.068) than GEN. 3) Regarding predictors for health fitness age, there were significant differences in abdominal circumference (P<.05) and side step (P<.01) SC and GEN. 4) There was no significant difference in chronological age between SC (40.57±4.18 yrs) and GEN (42.23±3.40 yrs); however, health fitness age was significantly lower in SC (38.79±6.80 yrs) than GEN (45.38±5.94 yrs). Gap from chronological age to health fitness age was significantly different between SC (-1.79±5.49 yrs) and GEN (3.15±4.67 yrs). 5) No significant difference was found in daily physical activity level and energy intake, except percent of protein intake, between SC and GEN. It was concluded that insulin sensitivity and possibly blood lipid profiles were improved and health fitness age was reduced by sport climbing club activity per se regardless of physical activity level and/or food intake in middle-aged women, indicating that sports climbing club activity would be beneficial for health promotion in middle-aged women. The effectiveness of sports climbing club activity was confirmed by the results of the present study.
