This dissertation examines 《8 Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1》 by the Russian composer and pianist Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (1880–1951), situating the work within the historical context of the early twentieth century, a period marked by profound musical transformations. As the traditional tonal system that had dominated Western music for approximately four centuries began to encounter its limitations, diverse modernist movements—including Impressionism, Expressionism, atonality, the twelve-tone technique, and Neoclassicism—emerged and reshaped the musical landscape. In contrast to these radical developments, Medtner remained firmly committed to the principles of traditional tonal organization and classical musical forms. Under the influence of the conservative educational environment of the Moscow Conservatory and the guidance of teachers who emphasized classical traditions, he developed a distinctive musical language that combined sonata-based formal structures, literary inspiration drawn from Russian literature, and virtuoso pianistic techniques rooted in the late-Romantic tradition.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the stylistic foundations of Medtner’s early musical language through an analysis of 《8 Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1》, the first significant work composed during his years at the Moscow Conservatory. Despite its importance, this work has received relatively limited scholarly attention both in Korea and abroad. Unlike many composers whose musical styles underwent substantial changes throughout their careers, Medtner demonstrated a remarkable degree of stylistic consistency, maintaining the compositional tendencies and aesthetic principles established in his youth until the end of his life. Therefore, an examination of his early works provides important insights into the fundamental characteristics that shaped his entire artistic output.
Prior to the musical analysis, this study explores Medtner’s life, intellectual background, and aesthetic outlook. It further investigates three principal characteristics of his piano works: his adherence to traditional formal and tonal systems, the intertextual relationship between his music and Russian literature, and the distinctive qualities of his character pieces and suite compositions. Based on this framework, all eight pieces of 《8 Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1》 are analyzed in detail.
The analysis demonstrates that this early cycle already contains many of the musical and aesthetic features that would later become hallmarks of Medtner’s mature style. These include sophisticated musical references to literary texts by writers such as Mikhail Lermontov and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a late-Romantic musical language influenced by the lyricism of Chopin and grounded in traditional harmonic practice, and highly developed pianistic figurations that utilize the full range of the keyboard. The findings reveal that the essential stylistic and technical characteristics of Medtner’s later masterpieces were already present in this early work in a remarkably mature form.
In conclusion, 《8 Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1》 represents both a significant milestone in the formation of Medtner’s artistic identity and an important contribution to the tradition of the character piece in the early twentieth century.
