젠더화된 도시담론 구축을 위한 시론적 검토: 서구 페미니스트 도시연구의 기여와 한계 및 한국 도시지리학의 과제 = Building up Gendered Urban Theories: The Contributions and Limits of Western Feminist Studies of the Urban and their Challenges to Korean Urban Geographies

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper supports the necessity of gendered perspectives in contemporary urban studies in spite of recent suspicions and contentions over the usefulness of feminism in society in general. One of the reasons resides in the fact that the very concept and operation of city are based on gendered dichotomy and revealing this can enhance the understanding of gender inequality. The gendered processes become even more critical in recent urbanization in that neoliberal urbanization and globalization operate based on the flexiblization of women labors, the massive switch of significant portions of reproductive labor, traditionally performed by women without payment, into paid works, and globalization of gendered divisions of labour. Feminism is not confined to partial ``women`` issues because gender has been deeply engaged in not only reproduction, typically known as women`s realm, but also all other parts of social functioning including production. This means that urban studies need to incorporate gendered perspectives to enhance their accountability. The paper aims at exploring the theoretical resources for feminist urban studies and their implications to Korean academics. It in particular suggests them to articulate intersectionality, a conceptual tool to capture a complicate topology of power through examining the way in which gender is combined with other kinds of oppressions.
