D. H. 로렌스의 ‘응시’와 ‘침묵’의 서사: 「흔들-목마의 승리자」를 중심으로 = The Rhetoric of Gaze and Silence: Focusing on “The Rocking-Horse Winner”

This article is intended to examine the rhetoric of gaze and silence focusing on “The Rocking-Horse Winner” of D. H. Lawrence. In recognition of the gap between the signifier and the signified, Lawrence always tries to devise a new way of understanding and a new rhetoric for the future novel. In this respect, “The Rocking-Horse Winner” is a good example of showing Lawrence’s own aesthetics and rhetoric. Through the repetition of characters’ gaze transformation and a silence writing, a symbolic or metaphysical meaning becomes “a mere puzzling noise”, and then the novel is made to exist beyond any given illumination. Especially, the gaze and silence by Paul visualizes the characteristics of the Lawrence’s rhetoric in the novel by transforming the gaze scheme with the position of ‘looking at’ or ‘being looked at’. Moreover, the silence writing of Paul leads to de-centering the textuality in the result of a non-linearity and abrupt rupture. In this way, Lawrence avoids being reduced to an old order, and then creates a new way of writing.
