예술을 바꾸는 기술, 기술을 바꾸는 예술 = 비디오 아티스트 백남준의 상상력과 기술철학

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서는 백남준의 비디오 아트의 사례를 분석해서 기술과 예술이 맺는 관계의 하나의 양식을 규명하려 한다. 이를 위해서 우선 백남준이 어떻게 기술을 이용해서 자신의 예술을 새롭게 재창조했는가를 보일 것이다. 그리고 거꾸로 그가 예술을 통해서 기술과 기술에 의해서 지배받는 현대 사회를 어떻게 바꾸고 새롭게 창조할 수 있다고 생각했는지를 드러낼 것이다. 이런 과정을 보임으로써, 우리는 예술과 기술의 경계가 허물어지고, 재설정되고, 새롭게 만들어지는 과정을 이해할 수 있고, 이를 통해서 예술과 기술의 다차원적인 상호작용을 규명할 수 있다. 이런 작업은 백남준의 예술세계를 더 잘 이해하게 해 줄 뿐만 아니라, 21세기의 과학기술과 예술의 융합을 위해 필요한 과학기술적 상상력과 예술적 상상력의 관계를 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Focusing on Nam June Paik’s video art, this paper explores a mode of relationship by which art and technology interact. For this, this paper first shows how Nam June Paik recreated his art by using technologies. Then it will reveal how he, with his new video art, conceived of subverting modern technology and the technological society. With this, we will understand how the boundary between art and technology is blurred, redrawn, and then reconstructed ? a process which reveals the multi-layered and multi-dimensional interactions between art and technology. This not only leads us to a better understanding of Nam June Paik’s art world, but to a deeper understanding of the interconnection between artistic and technoscientific imagination. Such understandings are essential to the convergence of art and technoscience for the 21st century.
