영문초록: This study discusses the Korean high school students' use of English prepositions at, on, in by analysing errors of the various aspects of the acquisition process in a cross sectional way. Preposition cloze-type test and controlled English compositions were employed for conducting the experiment. The results and findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, idioms were overused in inappropriate contexts, which were resulted from different strategies used by the students in cloze-type test and controlled composition test respectively. Secondly, both native language and target language effect on the use of English preposition at, on, in by various strategies like overgeneralization, interference, etc. Third, the accuracy level of the English preposition at, on, in usage was generally low. The accuracy of the preposition in is high in both cloze-test and controlled composition. This results from the role of L1 transfer. On the other hand, the use of specific preposition often appeared without special strategies. Fourth, the accuracy level of the core meaning of English preposition at, on, in is higher than that of the abstractive meaning of English preposition at, on, in. This occurred by familarity of core meaning through frequent usages in English learning. Based on these findings, alternative ways in teaching English prepositions are suggested. The prepositions should be approached within the framework of discourse, and thus make learners aware of the meanings of prepositions in the contexts in which they are used. Given this, teachers should develop proper methodology to enhance student's competence in English prepositions
