이문열 <사람의 아들>의 구조주의적 분석 = A Structuralistic Analysis of <The Son of Man> by Mun-Yeol Lee

This article is a study of <The Son of Man> by Mun-Yeol Lee on the structuralism. The Binarity is a important strategy idea to understand literary works in the structural literary theory. We can confirm the binarity in this work. There are factors of the binarity in the characters setting, the time setting, and the spatial setting. The factors in the characters setting are Yo-Seop Min/Dong-Pal Jo, Jesus/Ahas Pertz, and Yahweh/a great spirit. The factor in the time setting is past/present. The factor in the spatial setting is Korea/Judea. These things are not ended but are extended tridimensionally.
The binarity reflects the basic semantics of novel. So in this work, this complicated binarity richens the semantic network. This is the merit of this novel. It is good that the binarity in this work makes the consistent, unified structure.


<The Son of Man>is the frame novel. It uses the mystery technique. It is different from the normal frame structure―a frame and a frame-story. But, there is another frame in a frame in this novel. So there are three steps in this narratively structure.
A frame-story is Ahas Petz plot. Another out frame in the frame is Sergeant Nam. plot. The inner frame is Yo-Seop Min/Dong-Pal Jo plot. The out frame's character, Sergeant Nam, is connected with the inner frame's character, Yo-Seop Min/Dong-Pal Jo. And they are connected with the frame-story's character, Ahas Pertz. It is complicated but organic and unified.


Achrony is the basic attribute of the traditional narrative. As a result of this study, there is a little discordance of time. But there is not any discordance in the frame-story. The structure like this is the chronological narrative to be found in the folk tales. And it is different from the traditional narratively structure. However, in the time structure of the overall narrative, the present and the past, are arranged clossly. The achrony is obeyed thoroughly. This achrony is worth in the literary narrative tradition. Because the general archrony overcomes the weakness that it is not followed the arcrony rule in the particular.
