다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The election of the third President and fourth Vice-President were held on 15 May 1956. The Democratic Party and the Progressive Party pursued the union of opposition parties against the candidates Rhee Syngman and Lee Ki Poong of the Liberal Party. The candidates Shin Ik Hi and Chang Myun of the Democratic Party, and the candidates Cho Pong Am and Park Ki Chul of the Progressive Party began talks about the union of opposition parties, that is, a sole candidate negotiation for the change of regime. The internal and external forces of the Nation Assembly mediated the union of opposition parties. However, the two rounds of Shin-Cho talks ultimately failed. Because Shin Ik Hi suddenly died on May 5 just ahead of the 15 May election. It seemed to have made a practical unification, but the Democratic Party did not support Cho. They induced to the memorial-votes, and eventually there occured nearly 185 million invalid votes. Although Rhee Syngman succeeded to third-term with 504 million votes, Cho Pong Am as well obtained 216 million votes despite the massive memorial-votes. After the death of Shin, according to the rumors of Shin-Cho tacit agreement, Cho would have to resign the candidate without any conditions on May 5th.
