Unlike other arts, we depend entirely upon our eyesight when we appreciate painting. However, we do not simply look at the painting through our eyes, but we communicate with image through synesthetic interaction among the senses of hearing, touch, taste and smell together with our eyesight.
This concept has clearer meaning in today's environment. First of all, the tendency to transfer utility-oriented functionalism design into sensibility design that keeps various sensual elements intact is putting much emphasis on other sensual elements other than eyesight in visual arts. Besides, the 'sense of touch' is a lot more emphasized in visual arts than other sensual elements as the contemporary society has been changed into the society based on digital media and image media.
Our senses are said to have undergone the development of our special senses corresponding to the change in media. In this regard, the image media, among which the television is one of the representatives, lead our 'tactile participation' as a countermeasure against incomplete visual images due to the low resolution of the television, while the digital image equipped with two-way system consolidates these characteristics of participation.
The method of 'participation’ enables us to change our senses when exposed to visual arts and there will be a vital change in our 'tactile sense,' in which we 'are willing to touch the painting or design with our hands' along with 'our eyesight' when appreciating them.
Therefore, this study will focus on 'tactile sense,' one of our physical senses, which require us to pay attention in accordance with such periodic change. Fundamentally, visual arts are transmitted through our eyesight so that it is a good idea to take a look at 'visual tactility,' in which one can feel through our eyes in 'our tactile sense,' and the modeling elements that induce visual tactility.
The visual tactility can be expressed as 'a tactile experience that can be felt through one's eyes.' In order to induce the visual tactility in paintings, one needs to take a careful look at the process of how it is formed. The visual tactility, an indirect tactile sense through one's eyes, has a different process from a direct tactile sense with skin contact in the process of how the tactile sense is formed. That is to say, primarily, the tactile distance inducing a mental state of wanting to touch through one's eyes is ensured. Secondly, the 'visual tactility' is formed when some sensual elements that the senses have (feeling of roughness, texture and elasticity) generated.
The modeling elements that induce visual tactility include form, texture and colors. All of them are involved in the process of forming visual tactility, but each of them participates in forming the image of visual tactility in a little bit different way due to their individual characteristics. That is, the form is mostly involved in the element that causes one to have 'a mental state of feeling by touching' as the first level, the colors are connected with the endowment of the second level, tactile sense, due to the sensual characteristics that the colors have, and the texture is linked with the two aforementioned senses as an irritant of tactile sense.
In this aspect, I would like to observe the aspects with regards to visual tactility through the examples such as form, texture and colors as modeling elements of visual tactility and to search for the method to induce visual tactility.
In summary, I would like to suggest the design that is needed today by means of applying the elements of visual tactility specified in the theory to the creation of real works.
