초기불교의 일체지에 대한 경험주의적 분석 = The Concept of Omniscience in Early Buddhism: An Empirical Analysis

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 초기불교의 일체지를 경험주의적 시각에서 분석한다. 붓다에게 일체(sabba)란 6근으로 정의되는 인식주관과 6경으로 설명되는 인식객관을 대표한다. 이는 불교에서 일체지는 경험 세계와 관련된 것을 주로 의미하고 형이상학적 문제들에 대한 지혜는 배제됨을 뜻한다. 독화살의 비유, 심사빠 숲의 비유, 장님 코끼리 만지기의 비유도 동일한 맥락에서 바라보아야 한다. ｢께왓다 숫따(Kevaḍḍha- sutta)｣의 빨리본과 한역본도 초기불교의 일체지에 대한 태도를 서술하고 있다. 이 법문은 어떻게 대범천(Mahā-brahmā)이 탐구적인 비구가 던진 질문에 맞닥뜨려서 반응하는지를 서술하고 있다. 다른 신들 앞에서 체면이 깎이지 않으려고 대범천은 동문서답을 반복하지만, 마침내 자신은 질문에 대한 답변을 알지 못함을 시인하고 붓다에게 물어보라고 제안한다. 그래서 붓다가 반박한 일체지는 모든 것들에 대해 단번에 일어나서 끊임없이 현전하는 일체지의 가능성을 부인한 것일 뿐 6근을 통해서 경험적으로 알 수 있는 일체지의 가능성을 부인한 것이 아니다. 붓다가 다른 사람들도 계발하고 성취할 수 있는 삼명(三明, te-vijjā/tisso vijjā)을 주장한 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper, I analyze the early Buddhist concept of omniscience from the viewpoint of an empiricism. For the Buddha, “all” or “everything” represented the subject defined in terms of the six senses and the object explained in terms of six sense objects. This implies that omniscience in the early Buddhist teachings is principally concerned “the world of experience” and excludes knowledge of metaphysical matters. The parable of the poisoned arrow, the parable of the Siṃsapā grove, and the parable of blind men and an elephant should be seen in the same light. The Pāli and Chinese versions of the Kavaḍḍha-sutta also depicts the early Buddhist attitude towards omniscience. The same discourse describes how Mahā-brahmā reacted when faced with a question posed by an inquisitive monk. In order to avoid losing face in front of the other gods, Mahā-brahmā gave evasive replies, until he had to admit that he did not know an answer, and that the question should better be put to the Buddha, who would able to solve it. Thus it seems to follow that what the Buddha rejected is the possibility of continuous and simultaneous knowledge of everything, but not empirical knowledge of whatever can be known through six sense doors. That explains why the Buddha’s claim is to a threefold knowledge (te-vijjā/tisso vijjā), which can be developed and achieved by others as well.
