한국사회의 자살과 뒤르케임의 자살론 = 가족주의 습속과 관련하여

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한국 사회의 자살을 낳는 사회·문화적 요인의 심각성을 드러내고자 하는 목적을 갖는다. 그동안 한국 사회의 자살 현상에 대한 기존 연구들은 주로 개인 부적응적 요인들을 주목하는 시각에 의존해 심인성적 및 생리적 변인들을 자살의 주요 원인으로 보는 경향이 지배적이었다. 때문에 개인의 환경적 요인으로서 사회·문화 차원의 구조적 요인들을 주변화 하는 경향이 있어 왔다. 하지만 이와 같은 관점들은 뒤르케임이 주장했듯이, 개인 일반에 편재하는 심리적 및 생리적 요인들의 부정성을 증폭하여 자살 충동을 조장하고 추동하는 "집합적 경향"이 정서·문화의 형태로 작동하고 있다는 점을 통찰하지 못하는 한계를 갖는다. 이 글에서는 한국의 사회문화 배경에서 이 집합적 경향과 유비되는 개념으로 "가족주의적 습속(habits of the heart)"의 개념을 가정한다. 가족주의적 습속의 존재 구속적 속성은 한국 사회의 자살 경향을 낳는 강력한 문화·정서적 세력으로 작용한다. 이 시각에서, 한국 사회의 자살은 개인 차원의 정신·병리적 현상이나 다양한 사회구성 단위들의 단일 요인에 의해 발생하는 현상이 아니라, 이 가족주의적 습속과 불가분하게 연관된 문화·정서 차원의 집합적 경향에 의해 초래되는 사회·문화적 현상이라는 것을 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay is to reveal the significance of socio-cultural factors which causes the higher rate of suicide in recent Korean society. It seems the on-going studies on suicidal phenomena, which have tended to regard the individual psychological and physiological factors as the main suicidogenic causes, have so far failed to examine the effect of the cultural-emotional dimensions. However, this essay assumes following Durkheim`s theory of suicide that there has been in Korean society a strong "collective disposition" which promotes and reinforces the individual`s suicidal disposition. It is assumed that main root of the Korean collective disposition is related to "habits of the heart" of Korean society which usually functions in cultural-emotional forms. Considering the significance of this dimension, it is argued that current increase in suicide is not merely a psycho-pathological phenomenon, but rather a socio-cultural one closely related to the habits of the heart, i.e. the Korean collective disposition.
